The next layer to look at is the Fill Layer. In effect it’s just an empty pixel player designed to take solid colour fill and or a gradient fill. Generally used towards the end of your PP work it helps to add a final finish. Again they can be customized by changing the opacity and or the blend mode, let’s take a look at the two most common uses of the Fill layer.
The first screen shot shows the fill layer being applied.
When it’s first shown it defaults to a solid white colour fill and is ready to be changes. In the screen shot below you’ll see that I’ve changed to a solid blue; (I know, very boring). Now see what difference it makes when you click on the layer, change the % opacity and the blend mode.
In the images above I’ve changed the opacity to 50% and the blend mode to Soft Light, just a starting point for you to consider. This obviously allows for a wealth of changes, some good, some not so good so you are encouraged to ‘play around’ with the settings and even add a second Fill layer to see the effect.
In these short / basic blogs on layers I’ve only aimed at giving an insight into the workings of Layers in Affinity Photo, they will also give you a ‘heads-up’ when using another PP programme.
I recommend that you take a look at the links below for a much fully insight into the world of PP. Take a look at Udemy, it’s an online learning platform in which you purchase courses ranges across a wide spectrum; a note here, wait for the sales, they are often offered and will save a lot of money.
The second is the great set of free tutorials offered by Affinity Photos on the we site and the third recommendation is of Youtube. There are just too many video here to count so ‘fill your boots’
Thanks for reading the blogs, i hope you found them a useful starting point.
